Description
The LSR 3-2 apparatus employs the same double-yoke design as LSR1. The Loads due to confining pressure and differential stress are decoupled and pressure remains constant while advancing the load piston. The loading frame has a 980-kN loading capacity and can achieve strain rates from 10-3 to 10-9 s-1. The large-volume pressure vessel of this apparatus accommodates deformation of cylindrical specimens up to 100 mm in diameter by 200 mm in length at confining and pore pressures to 20 MPa, and temperatures to 125 °C. This machine is suited to investigate mechanical properties of weak rocks with large mean grain sizes, such as rock salt (with a stress resolution of 0.1 MPa).
